Set up Hark
Hark is a voice app for your Hermes Agent. Hermes does the setup for you: you paste one prompt and scan one code.
-
Copy the setup prompt
Open Hark and tap Copy setup prompt for Hermes, or copy it here:
Set me up with Hark, the iPhone voice app for you. Read https://heyhark.app/setup.md and follow its steps on this machine, then give me the hark://connect link it ends with.
-
Paste it into Hermes
Use any Hermes chat: the terminal, Hermes Desktop, Telegram. Hermes turns on its API server, gives it an HTTPS address with Tailscale, and gets a ModelRelay key for speech. It asks you only for what it can't do itself, such as signing in.
-
Scan or tap the link
Hermes ends with a
hark://connectlink. Scan its QR code with the iPhone Camera, or tap the link if you chat with Hermes on your phone. Hark asks you to confirm, then connects.
What you need
- Hermes Agent running on a computer you control.
- Tailscale on that computer, and on your iPhone too (otherwise Hermes can use Tailscale Funnel, which puts the gateway on the internet behind its key).
- A ModelRelay account for speech. Hermes can create one with you.
If Hark can't connect
- “Can't reach …”
- The gateway or its HTTPS address is down. On the computer, check
hermes gateway statusandtailscale serve status. Withtailscale serve, your iPhone must be connected to Tailscale. - “… has no valid HTTPS certificate”
- Turn on HTTPS certificates in the Tailscale admin console, then ask Hermes to run the setup again.
- “That URL isn't a Hermes API server”
- The address points at something else, such as the Hermes dashboard. The API server listens on port 8642 by default.
- “The Hermes gateway rejected its API key”
- The key changed. Ask Hermes to run the setup again for a fresh link.
- “ModelRelay rejected its API key” or no speech
- Check the key and the account's credit at modelrelay.ai.
Doing it by hand? The exact steps Hermes follows are in setup.md. Enter the results under Enter details manually in Hark.
